My Piper is sick. :( Well not really. She's better now but I'm still not happy about the follow up. On the outside she seems very happy and healthy. She has the best disposition. Not overly fussy, no fever, or really any symptoms.
About 2 weeks ago I noticed that her urine had a very strong, foul odor. I had kind of considered a UTI but thought she was too young so I googled it. According to several mothers on babycenter.com their children all had strong, foul urine right before a tooth would pop through. Piper had been teething so I considered it a possibility, but was still concerned so I called the clinic. Dr. Pek wanted to run a UA on a urine sample just to be sure.
Most of you have probably not had to try to obtain a urine sample from a 6 month old female but let me tell you it is NOT as easy as it sounds. 7 pedi-bags and 48 diapers later I FINALLY got a sample and took it to the lab.
They called me that same day to let me know that Piper had a UTI. :( They prescribed an antibiotic and sent the sample in for a culture and sensitivity to see what grew and what antibiotic it was susceptible to. So we took the omnicef for 10 days. Then I took piper in for her 6 month old well child check and we got all her shots. :( The dr. also said that after reviewing her culture, which came back positive that she would like to refer Piper to a pediatric nephrologist.
So the nurse from the nephrologist's office called and said they would see us Thursday Feb 16th but she also has to have some tests done before her appointment with the doctor and my heart is just breaking thinking about all the horrible things she has to have done. :( I KNOW we have to do it but its just going to be awful. They are trying to rule out Vesicoureteral Reflux which is where urine refluxes back up in to the kidneys and can cause kidney damage if not caught early. Apparently in infants UTIs are very uncommon and if they do occur its more likely due to some abnormality rather than external causes.
SO keep us in your prayers and we'll keep you posted.
